Basement Finds: Two 1990's Sega Genesis Game Consoles, Controllers, and More

My grandparents are planning on downsizing soon and they are getting rid of a lot of junk. While hauling boxes to the curb I came across a box with a Sega Genesis towards the top. I thought it would be a waste to throw them away so I bought them home for closer inspection.

  • you could have cleaned them wd40 does a good job on old computer stuff look a Yes tec city Brian is always doing it

  • What I think you should do is check to see if your main Genesis displays the "Produced By Or Under License From Sega Enterprises" screen. All the Genesis' that do that have the TMSS lockout chip in them. I saw that one of the Genesis' you got doesn't have that TMSS chip in it. The other one does. I was able to read the FCC ID on both of the systems and one said "FJ846EUSASEGA" which indicates a non TMSS Genesis. The other one said "FJ8USASEGA" which is a standard TMSS Genesis Model 1. The lockout chip was included in the later Genesis model 1s because Sega found out that EA and Accolade were making games for the system without their permission. These early games actually require the non TMSS console to work. This is a great thread for finding out different Genesis model 1s and 2s. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?7796-GUIDE-Telling-apart-good-Genesis-1s-and-Genesis-2s-from-bad-ones.

  • Hey! I know this is an offtopic but you seem like a nice guy who may help me out. I'm on my first year in college, and it seems like i will really need a laptop to carry with me to the library and that kind of things. It seems like thinkpads are my best option and here in europe, there are some options in the same price range. Do you think it is better to get a x240, a t440, a t440p or a l440, given that it has to last me about 5 years? T430, X430 etc are on the same price range and I don't know if they are a good option either. Any help is welcome!

  • Another problem can occur is if the Sega Genesis doesn't power on or you have to move the connector for it to power on. Just open the console up, get a solder iron, solder, flux. For the power connector put some flux on the solder points and reflow the solder and add some new solder whilst your at it. Then your Sega Genesis will power on with no issues. Whilst it's open you might aswell clean it with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol.

For the set up upgrade to S Video or Scart from https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/sega/mega-drive-1. For RGB you will need a scart to HDMI converter which you can get for 20 bucks. A Six button controller is great for fighting games. Here is a list of amazing games also DO NOT USE MULTICARTS OR ANY KNOCKOFF CART, THEY ARE CHEAPLY MADE AND ARE NOT SAFE FOR CONSOLES DUE TO THE EXTRA VOLTAGE THEY CARRY WHICH CAN KILL YOUR CONSOLE. Now back to the list

    Sonic 1,2,3 Knuckles
    Streets of Rage 1,2,3
    Phantasy Star 2 and 3
Last Battle known in Japan as Fist of the North Star
    Golden Axe
    Shining Force
    Ghouls N Ghosts
    TMNT Hyperstone Heist
    Contra Hard Corps
    Street Fighter 2
    Mortal Kombat
    Altered Beast
    Comix Zone
Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3
    Toejam and Earl
    Earthworm Jim
Mega Games you might something like this in the US which are official Sega multicarts
    Hang On
    Gunstar Heroes
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Bonanza Bros
    Eco the Dolphin
    Kid Chameleon
