Treasure Games on the Sega Genesis

[00:00] – Gunstar Heroes (1993)
[03:10] – Dynamite Headdy (1994)
[05:11] – Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen (1994)
[06:50] – McDonald’s Treasure Land Adventure (1993)
[08:47] – Alien Soldier (1995)
[10:54] – Light Crusader (1995)

EARLY CORRECTIONS
I may have misspoke about Treasure and McDonald’s Treasureland Adventure. I’m not 100% clear which one came first in the developmental cycle or how it came to be that they were contracted to do that game — or if it was Sega or Treasure themselves that made the call to finish and release one first over the other. I know for sure that Gunstar Heroes was officially released first and Treasureland came second, but I’m fuzzy on the why, probably misspoke and hopefully someone can help me clarify on that.

Alien Soldier looks like Falco from Star Fox… he doesn’t actually look like Star Fox. Nobody will read this anyway, but that’s okay. I still like you.

Light Crusader is very plain as far as action RPGs go, but I really liked it a lot.

  • Didn't see your favorite Sega Genesis game mentioned here? I might have covered it in one of my other Sega videos here:
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdGtTWqCEvuKoGNFO64VvTcVx9HAw4H4u

  • Pretty awesome stuff. I was a big Genesis fan but in Fall of '93 I went to college and never bought a new game after that for 16 bit. Too bad Treasure didn't start in the early 90s!

  • My favorite weapon in Gunstar Heroes is the double flamethrower, because I'm all about the DPS wifey, but I have to admit that homing + laser = broken. Light Crusader was quite an experience; some of the puzzles were a pain because of the isometric perspective or just plain cryptic (PENUMBRA!!!), but the overall experience was really something special, once you got past the clunkiness.

  • Ahahaha I grew up playing Gunstar Heroes with my kid brother (we were Sega kids).

My favorite weapon was double flames since I was skilled with the flame thrower. Also, I'm not sure if you were aware, but the chaser-flame gun can be controlled.

You were playing as the guy who can fire in eight directions while locking in place (which is ideal for the flame chaser). But, if you hold down fire and use the d-pad, you can control where the flame goes.

Spinning it around in a small wheel is a good way to rack up damage.

But again, I always just used the Flame Thrower Plus.

  • Damn, I remember playing Gunstar Heroes for the first time at CES 93. They had Mega Man X and Warioland too. Ah, for the days before E3 took over everything…

  • Alien Soldier is an audio and visual tour de force for the Mega Drive hardware, a true treat to behold.
That being said, I was never a masochist with video games so it can take it's absurd difficulty and go fuck itself.

  • I would like to see Core Mega Drive and Mega CD games covered. Nice episode! Alot of how good a 16bit game looks depends on how much time they spent literally sitting down and drawing background images and making the sprites nice. It's not so much to do with hardware power.

I will say Treasure made some of the best and smoothest playing games. I only really enjoyed Yuu Yu Hakusho although the backgrounds and menus did put me off a bit. I found the games a bit shallow and lacking in solid mechanics.

  • Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, Gunstar Heroes, and Dynamite Headdy is also available on the Sega Genesis collection on Xbox One, PS4, and the Switch. I like it, there is some sound issues with some games, other then that, it's a good collection.

  • I just looked up Treasure on gamefaqs. Looks like they made an awesome shooter for the PC in 2014 called Ikaruga.
    Ikaruga
received overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam. It has a free demo also.

  • The fighting sound effects in Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen, along with other fighting games of that time, always reminded me of the fighting sound effects in the Kung Fu films of the 1970s and 80s.

  • RPG's are my favorite genre, and I had heard many people on YouTube talk about how great of a game Light Crusader is, so I was quick to snap it up when I saw it one day at a pawn shop. I tried it and was not impressed. Why people think the game is so great is beyond me. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not that good either. The controls kind of suck, and the game is just ugly to look at. I didn't get far into it at all though, so maybe I'll give it another go one of these days.

  • Some of the few games on the genesis/megadrive that pushed the system to its limits, a real bag of gems here

  • One thing is certain…the Sega Genesis library would be significantly weaker if it wasn't for Treasures masterpieces Gunstar H, Dynamite H, Yu Hakusho and especially Alien Soldier. A.S. could almost pass for a Saturn/Ps1 2D game, and yes while the game is challenging, it is completely fair, and alot of the challenge comes simply from learning the innovative mechanics/controls. It is imo, a Top 3 game from the 16-bit era deserving universal praise alongside the Snes games that everyone always boasts about…but of course, due to Sega's stupidity, it didn't get a physical US release, because they thought it was 2015 in 1995. Treasure has produced some of the greatest video games ever.

  • Apparently after Gunstar Heroes the team was split into three to make Alien Soldier, Light Crusader and YuuYuu Hakusho. Hence they are roughly one third of the quality.

  • I love this channel! Clean audio, good production, great background information as well as the right amount of humor and persoanlity to set FNA apart from all the other (oversaturated) retro gamers on YouTube. Thanks man!

  • Dude seriously your videos are AWESOME! you're my new VIDEO GAME LJR ! With a radio voice ! Two thumbs up DUDE !

  • Your voice and James Rolfe's – of Cinemassacre when he's reviewing movies solo – are soothing to my ears and help me sleep. Please take that as a compliment, lol.

  • All those games is on the Sega Genesis Classics for the PS4/Xbox One/Nintendo Switch except for the McDonald's game and Yu Yu Hakusho

  • I play retro games on my channel. Would love anyone to come check it out. 🙏
Yes I went there. Sorry YouTube, but I’m new.

  • Supposedly, Contra Hard Corp was ghost-produced by Treasure, but I've never seen verification. It definitely has the feel of a Treasure game.

  • Vitality 999? Is someone cheating in Gunstar heroes? And it's all about the tracer laser weapon combo.
